Trophic Chain Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination in a Highly Productive Upwelling Area in Southeastern Brazil

چکیده
Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) are legacy anthropogenic compounds known to persist for several years in the environment. The continuous use of some OCP, such as DDT, after restrictions developing countries cause concern, due their deleterious effects marine life and humans. Studies assessing OCP contamination coastal environments still scarce South America there is a need understand impacts from trophic chain accumulation these pollutants life. In this study, we have assessed levels muscle liver estimated biomagnification factor upwelling system members, including fish, squid, mammal Southeastern Brazil. DDT degradation product DDE was detected highest concentrations Franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei), 86.4 ng·g−1 wet weight, fish liver. general, higher were found than muscle, except croaker. Biomagnification factors (BMF) top predator P. blainvillei carnivorous cutlass (Trichiurus lepturus) on average between 0.2 1.8. Continued monitoring region warranted better distribution fate over time, with goal establish strategies conservation local dolphin species assess human health risks populations.

متن کاملPatterns of organochlorine pesticide contamination in neotropical migrant passerines in relation to diet and winter habitat.
Eleven species of Neotropical migrant passerines collected in Illinois (USA) during May 1996, were analyzed for the presence of organochlorine (OC) pesticides. At least one of five OC pesticide residues was detected in 66 of 72 birds, representing all species examined. The contaminants most frequently detected were p,p'-DDE, dieldrin and heptachlor epoxide, all of which were present in the 10-3...

OBJECTIVES The objective of this article is to extend our previous studies of persistent organic pollutant (POP) contamination of U.S. food by measuring perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), organochlorine pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in composite food samples. This study is part of a larger study reported in two articles, the other of which reports levels of polybrominated diphe...
متن کاملOrganochlorine pesticide contamination of foods in Africa: incidence and public health significance
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been used worldwide, particularly in Africa, for several decades. Although many are banned, several African countries still use OCPs especially for the prevention and control of malaria. OCPs are characterized by their bio-accumulation in the environment, especially in the food chain, where they find their way into the human body. Despite no clear epidemiol...
